No design is complete without having some plants, even if they’re faux plants,” Bibawi notes. “A lot of organic plants, trees, that kind of stuff. For true updated Southern style, you need plants. But don’t stop your greenery on the wallpaper. LePori especially recommends this look for homes that don’t have an open floor plan - you can, for example, put floral wallpaper in a dining room and limit it to that space. The effect is that feeling of sitting on your grandma’s covered porch without a hint of it looking like grandma.” Lenney recommends “a soft color palette, especially blues and whites.
Then add modern touches, bold textiles and mid-century lighting. “We don’t want someone to walk in and say, ‘Oh, they got all this from Pottery Barn.’ We want it to look like this client has had good taste for 30 years and has collected all these things, and they’ve just magically come together.”įor an authentic updated Southern look, start with your antiques and use them to anchor your room.
“We don’t want to come in and it looks like design fairies just exploded on your house,” LePori laughs. The key to this look, say LePori and Parker, is a collected aesthetic. We have to accept it, and then figure out, how do we incorporate the style and vision we have?” If you have an old-world style home and a modern sensibility, updated Southern style is a natural fit. “I do think it’s important to embrace the way the home is. It will add immediate warmth to the room.“The thing that’s the worst is you go into these old-world styled homes and people want to try to turn them modern, and you need a lot of money to make that happen,” Bibawi shares. It will be just beautiful with all that white!īring those outdoors in friends! Use potted plants large and small, faux greenery, etc and place them all around. Use this in your side tables, coffee table, sofa back table and even bookcases.

The brunt colored one they used helps make the wood pieces of furniture they selected mesh well with the white sofa and chair. Select a rug that will be neutral enough but still give you some color. Mix your patterns and it will give you a great layered look. I really think this could work with any color and not just the blue and white they used. Really they can be function and as for the same reason as painting the walls white, it makes the accessories and greenery pop. Any spills, mess, etc and I just whipped it off and through it in the wash. I have to tell you I had a slipcovered sofa for 10 years and loved it. Okay I hear y’all chiming in and saying “but I have kids!”. The white gives this room a blank slate for the warm tones of furniture and pops of greenery. Either using brick or wood paneling will get you the look. The point is to add some architectural look to your walls when painting them white. Lucky ducks! But there are ways to get the look even when your home wasn’t constructed with it like this post.
